American army commanders meet in Brazil

In Rio de Janeiro, the 35th cycle of the Conference of Commanders of American Armies (CCAA) has been in progress since November 6.

This event, promoted by the Conference of American Armies (CAA)—made up of 29 members—and chaired by the Brazilian Army during the 2022-2023 biennium, serves as a forum for identifying mutual defense interests, enhancing cooperation and integration among the armies, and generating initiatives to improve interoperability. It also deals with predefined common issues and facilitates personal interaction among the commanders of member armies.

Army of the future

The conference focuses on the contribution of each nation to transforming and preparing the Army of the Future to address challenges and threats that could impact the security and stability of the American continent.

It includes six specialized conferences led by different countries, covering topics such as interoperability, army transformation processes, cyber security and defense, modernization processes, and doctrine development.

Military diplomacy

In an interview with Agência Brasil, Tomás Miguel Ribeiro Paiva, the commander of the Brazilian Army and head of the conference, emphasized “the importance of enhancing exchange, interoperability, and integration among American armies, thus strengthening hemispheric defense, knowledge, and military diplomacy, a component of international diplomacy.

This year, 22 out of the 29 member countries have representatives at the conference, and Brazil is set to hand over the chairmanship to Mexico in February of the following year.

This marks the fourth time that Brazil has taken on this role in the CCAA, which runs until November 9 and spans the cities of Rio de Janeiro and Resende.
